Valentine “mail box idea”

So I was looking around on Pinterest and found a cute idea.  Instead of making a mailbox I found an idea from a store and made a little envelope to put Valentine treats in.  I tied it to the back of our chairs so we could fill the envelopes during the week.

Here is what you need:

  • Two pieces of felt for each envelope you will make.  I used white but you can use what ever color you like.
  • Ribbon
  • Glue
  • Fabric paint
  • Felt hearts
  • Hole puncher or box cutter

To start I took the two pieces of felt and glued around the edge.  I left the top open.  To me this made it a lot easier to keep the felt pieces together when you either hole punch or cut slits in the felt to add the ribbon.

After I let the glue dry I used a box cutter to slit holes in the felt.  I did a few with a hole puncher but my hole puncher was not sharp enough and actually broke.  It is a little hard to see since I used a box cutter but there is a slit in the fabric in the corner.  If you use a box cutter please make sure you put cardboard under where you are cutting to keep from cutting your surface you are working on.  Make sure you leave the top open.  You will not need slits for the top.

After I cut all the slits in the felt.  (I made the slits maybe a little less than an inch apart.) I tied the ribbon in one corner.

Then I started to string the ribbon through the slits in the felt.  I wrapped my ribbon around the edge.

When I got to the end I just tied it off again.  Like I said above keep the top open.  I accidentally threaded the ribbon through the top part and I had to open the glued part.  Oops!  I guess that is what happens when you are trying to keep your project a secret from your kids to surprise them.

Next I used some fabric paint to draw a line down the felt to make it look like an envelope.

I then added a felt heart to make it look like the envelope was sealed with a sticker.

The finishing touch was to write my child’s name on it and tie ribbon in the corners to attach it to the chair.

This project is very easy for kids as well.  It is best the adult puts the holes in the felt and then the child can do the rest.  If you have any questions about this project feel free to comment below.  I really hope you enjoy this how to 🙂
